Malta Global Residence Program

A special tax status is granted to those who The Malta Global Residence Program (MGRP) grants qualifying applicants a special tax status. Third-country nationals, excluding EEA and Swiss nationals, who meet the requirements outlined in the Rules, become eligible for this special tax status through the Global Residence Programme.

A feature in the Malta Global Residence Program is that the individual gains a special tax status under the MGRP. An individual in the MGRP faces a 15% income tax rate on earnings originating outside Malta and transferred into the country and are required to pay a minimum annual tax of €15,000 by April 30th. Any income derived within Malta and not exempt from taxation under the Rules is subject to the standard 35% tax rate.

Not be a beneficiary of other tax programmes (Residents Scheme Regulations, High Net Worth Individuals Rules, Malta Retirement Programme, UN Pensions Programme, Qualifying Employment in Innovation and Creativity Rules, or Highly Qualified Persons Rules)
Own or rent a qualifying property which the individual occupies as a principal place of residence
Receiving stable and regular resources that adequately support themselves and their dependents.

Malta Permanent Residency Program

The Malta Permanent Residency Program allows for Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals to obtain permanent residency in Malta for a lifetime. With this program, individuals can access Schengen visa free, have the right to reside and settle in Malta indefinitely, and the possibility to apply for a work permit under a separate process. The main difference between the Malta Permanent Residency Program and the Malta Global Residence Program resides in the tax status.

This permit extends to EU or EEA or third country nationals staying in Malta for more than three months, those employed or opening a business in Malta, or those that can demonstrate their financial independence by maintaining sufficient funds or alternative income to support their lifestyle in Malta without the need for employment. Eligibility stems from those who plan to not physically stay in any other jurisdiction for more than 183 calendar days.

Malta Digital Nomad Visa

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa grants individuals the right to work remotely in Malta. To be eligible for this type of visa, one must prove that they can work remotely, be third country nationals, have health insurance covering risks in Malta, hold a valid purchase or rental agreement, and have a monthly income of at least €2,700. The individual must fall under one of three categories:

  • Work for a foreign employer with a contract of work
  • Be a partner/shareholder of a foreign-registered company for whom they conduct business activities.
  • Offer freelance or consulting services for permanent establishments in foreign countries with whom the applicant has contracts.

The process tends to take up to 30 days.
